Five years of research experience in the anthropology of the Middle East and North Africa. Thirty years of research experience in the history and theory of social and cultural anthropology from the eighteenth century on. Expertise includes library and archival research, organizational work, more than sixty scholarly articles, three book-length studies, and seven edited volumes.

1993-1994 Convenor of two sessions on "Geschichte der Ethnologie" for the biannual conference of the German Ethnological Society (DGV) in Leipzig, 3-8 October 1993 (with Dr. Hans-Jürgen Hildebrandt, Mainz, and Lothar Pützstück, MA, Köln), resulting in the establishment of the network "Geschichte der Ethnologie" as an Arbeitsgruppe der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde. Seventeen papers were presented, some were published separately.

 

1992-1994 Convenor of three sessions on "The History of European Anthropology" during the second biannual conference of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) in Prague, 29-30 August 1992 (with Prof.dr. Richard Jerábek, Brno and Dr. Arturo Alvarez Roldán, Granada), resulting in the establishment of the History of European Anthropology Network (HEAN), a network within the EASA. Fourteen of the eighteen papers were published in: Han F. Vermeulen & Arturo Alvarez Roldán (eds.) Fieldwork and Footnotes: Studies in the History of European Anthropology. London: Routledge, 1995.
